Seeds and Scales encompasses multiple niches-- being a permaculture site, plant nursery, and caring for animals. There are always new things happening!
Invasive species removal: Canadian Bull Thistle, milk thistle, yellow star thistle, Himalayan blackberry, tree of heaven, and multiple brooms invade thre property each year. I use minimal amounts of glyphosate applied directly, not sprayed, and remove everything with labor.
Every year we lose more and more trees on the property. Traditionally, unless you can give the wood away, large burn piles are made. After the first fires swept through, I hired a sawyer to mill as much as possible. My father and I stacked it and are using it to build new furniture. Fallen trees are used as log garden beds, habitat piles, and more before use as firewood, mulch, and biochar.
I am working towards habitat restoration of our oak woodland property. Multiple species of oaks; buckeyes; and more are hand collected and propagated. I am also working on collecting native grass seed to convert flammable, hazardous areas into natural meadows rich with biodiversity.
